What influenced your decision to become a CPA?

I remember working as a personal banker and being very interested in financial services, as a whole. I wanted to further my career but wasn’t sure the exact path I would take. At the time, I would ask questions to everyone that piqued my interest. I wanted to know what they did and how they got in their positions. One particular individual was a CPA. As I looked more into the idea of what a CPA was, I decided that completing the certification would open up several different pathways. Also, more education and certifications definitely couldn’t hurt my career.

What's the best aspect of your job?

I’m a people person; the connections I make are important to me. Building relationships with my clients and coworkers are the aspects of public accounting that I most enjoy. When I have put in the research and time that pays off in a big way, or even a small way, for a client, it’s a very rewarding feeling.

What opportunities did this career path open for you?

Once I decided to pursue the CPA license, I started looking for a CPA to work under to gain my required experience. This turned into a full-time public accounting position. I would not be in a senior management role today without the CPA certification.

How has being a KyCPA member helped you with your career?

The numerous committees and resources made available are by far the most helpful aspect of being a member.

What is the number one KyCPA member benefit that you have utilized?

The CPE courses offered and the Kentucky CPA Journals are what I have utilized the most.

How has your involvement with a KyCPA committee helped you or helped you make a difference in the profession?

The networking and other members you meet will open up new ideas and, if utilized, can help you grow. There are so many individuals that have areas of expertise or experience that you can learn from. By being a part of a committee, you get the opportunity to meet those individuals that you would otherwise not have crossed paths with.

Advice to students working towards becoming a CPA or new CPAs?

For students that may be waiting for the right time, I would say now is the right time. Don’t wait and don’t over study. To new CPAs, I would advise having patience, which is not my strongest characteristic. Experience and growth take time, but ultimately, becoming a CPA will open up many pathways. Be patient and open to new areas of growth any chance you get.
