Why did you decide to become a CPA? If there was a defining moment, tell us about it.

When I was in high school, I was one of the accountants for our school yearbook. That experience led me to the accounting department’s career day at Bellarmine University. A professor there, Dr. Schrader, was asking our group why we were interested in accounting. Most of us responded that we were good at math, and he completely shut us down. He said, “accounting has nothing to do with math” and explained what a career in accounting would really mean for us. From then on, I never considered another career path.

What attributes, skills are good to have as a CPA?

The most important skill to have as a CPA is adaptability. Clients and laws are ever-changing, and CPAs must be able to “roll with the punches” to serve our clients well. A willingness to learn new things and leave your comfort zone is also essential.

What is your favorite thing about your current position?

My favorite thing is the culture at my firm. We are a small modern firm prioritizing client service and work-life balance. Though we all have a job to do, we try to make work enjoyable, even during our busier times. We keep it fun during busy season with paper airplane contests, team lunches, and basketball contests.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to become a CPA?

Don’t hesitate! Pursuing a CPA license is a big commitment but ultimately worth the time and effort. The skills you acquire as a practicing CPA can lead to a diverse career and create many opportunities for you. Try a few internships to see where you fit best, as every firm is unique.

What was your educational path and why?

I completed a triple major in Accounting, Finance, and Economics at Bellarmine University to complete the 150-hour requirement to sit for the CPA exam. I felt that the addition of finance and economics degrees would give multiple perspectives and allow me to advise my clients better. I studied and completed the CPA exam while finishing my last semester of school. Completing the exam early allowed me to focus on work when I started my full-time position.
