CPAs and Addictions: Finding Hope and Healing

Overview

Substance abuse and mental health issues among CPAs has become of great concern among many state boards and the AICPA in recent years. This program will cover the factors that push CPAs to unhealthy behaviors, the prevalence of drug and alcohol abuse, and possible options in addressing the situation.  We will also discuss steps that friends and family can take to support their struggling CPA find hope and healing.

Objectives

• Identify the warning signs of addiction and substance abuse
• Develop strategies for assisting colleagues who are struggling
• Discover resources for CPAs coping with substance abuse or addiction

• Prevalence of substance abuse and depression among CPAs compared to the general population
• Factors that cause CPAs to be particularly susceptible to drug and alcohol abuse and mental health issues
• Identifying reasons why CPAs are reluctant to seek help
